The Windham Group at OLAFEST 2008 .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
The Windham Group Orlando's very own masters of jazz & funk, The Winham
Group, lead by Errol Windham in lead guitar with Willie Rast on drums, Tony
Venturini on Bass and Melissa Vallejo on Percussion.
“Old soul, new school, one mind,” is how the Windham Group describes their musical
philosophy. Taking from their influences and molding these styles into their own while
still respecting their forefathers makes for a smooth, classy jazz-funk creation.
Improvisation is also a big part of what the group presents to the world as they jam their
way through jazz riffs and the Orlando, FL music scene. Guitarist and vocalist Errol
Windham realizes that improv is what brings the group together, which also consists of
drummer Willie Rast and bassist Tony Venturini. The Windham Group displays their chemistry
by performing perfect transitions in their improv sessions. Wiilie keeps a light,
intricate, steady beat as Windham and Venturini trade off solos. Not afraid to explore the
higher notes a bass can produce, Venturini is brave in his soloing and is a true asset to
the group. Windham drives the jazz-funk feel home with his rhythmic guitar riffs and
classic solos. While performing, the Windham Group subtly pays tribute to their influences
that include Miles Davis, George Benson and just about any jazz or blues artist you can
think of. Every now and then, a bit of rock or reggae sound peeks through the jazz as
well, if you listen carefully. Mostly instrumental, the Windham Group is easy to listen to
as they create a wonderfully calming vibe in any room they play in. Windham, Rast, and
Venturini have each been surrounded by music their whole lives and live it everyday. They
have known each other for over ten years, have been playing together in one form or
another for over six years, but have only recently discovered their chemistry as a
permanent group. The Windham Group thrives in this chemistry and their goal is to share
the passion they have for their music with the masses. -K.Weick
